Who We Are

Running since 1973, and based in The Warehouse, since 1977, we have covered so many issues in and around Birmingham. As well as local issues we also campaign on national and global issues as part of the Friends of the Earth network.

We’re one of the biggest groups in the Friends of the Earth (EWNI) network, which is a unique network of campaigning groups working in over 170 communities across the country. Friends of the Earth is also the largest international network of environmental groups in the world, with affiliates in over 75 countries worldwide.

Friends of the Earth (Birmingham) Ltd  (BFoE)  has a different structure from most local groups. Because we have a building and have run different activities, we have a larger structure with more responsibilities in addition to what the campaigns group does. We’re a Community Benefit Society: a type of co-op.

Our large and dynamic volunteer campaigns group plans and carries out campaigns. Check out the campaigns meetings and volunteering pages for more information on how to get involved.

Our Board of Directors is the group elected by members at the AGM to oversee all BFoE activity.  It is responsible for running our building the Warehouse, managing finance, employees, building users and so on. It delegates campaigns activity to the campaigns group. See Who’s Who for more info.
