On 9 July 2025, Birmingham Friends of the Earth will be joining The Climate Coalition at the Act Now, Change Forever mass lobby in Westminster, London. This mass lobby is a key moment to show decision-makers that communities across the UK want bold, fair climate action. Thousands of people from across the country will be travelling to Westminster to meet their MPs on the same day to demand urgent political action. It’s one of the most powerful ways to show politicians that climate and nature must be a top priority.
At 12PM, to grab the attention of the media, we will take part in a collective stunt with everyone else who is part of the mass lobby. Throughout the day, we will also team up with others from Birmingham in meetings with MPs to demand action from the government for people, climate and nature. Members from Birmingham Friends of the Earth will be calling on their MP to take action specifically by supporting our Big Climate Plan campaign.
The Big Climate Plan campaign demands that the UK government’s new Carbon Budget Delivery Plan is both bold and fair. This is desperately needed because the UK is dangerously off track to meet its climate targets, notably its pledge to the rest of the world to cut emissions by over two-thirds by 2030. Friends of the Earth has five key demands for the government:
- Keep its promises to cut carbon emissions by developing credible policies, created with experts and the public.
- Invest in the future by fairly financing local, devolved nation, UK and international climate action.
- Ensure everyone can live in a warm home powered by cheap, clean energy.
- Deliver affordable, reliable public transport and clean air.
- Help people find well-paid green jobs by providing investment and training, especially for sectors and places most at risk of being left behind.
We are urging the government to put fairness at the heart of climate action, ensuring that the benefits are shared equally across society, with no one left behind. Read our fairness report here to find out more.
The government is due to publish this new climate plan by 29 October 2025, giving us limited time to make them listen. The mass lobby gives us a golden opportunity to convince MPs to support this campaign and take action by writing to members of Labour’s leadership team to push for a bold and fair climate plan. These members include Keir Starmer, Prime Minister; Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer; Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero; Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport; and Steve Reed, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. In order to secure a bold and fair climate plan, we need these politicians on our side.
