Over 50 years of environmental campaigning in Birmingham – from moving into The Warehouse in 1977 to the campaigns we run today.
The Heritage Project
To mark the 40th anniversary of moving into The Warehouse in Digbeth, we undertook a Heritage project funded by the National Lottery to chart BFoE’s history and its impact on Birmingham. The project drew on archive material and personal memories of volunteers and workers.
Over the years BFoE was involved in many pioneering activities including paper recycling and home insulation, and also helped establish successful organisations such as the Urban Wildlife Group and Pushbikes. The Warehouse has been home to green businesses including Muesli Base, The One Earth Shop, Recycled Paper Supplies and the Amazon Cafe.
We showcased our findings at Birmingham Heritage Week events in 2018 and 2019. Some of our collection is also available to view, by appointment, at the Wolfson Centre, Library of Birmingham.
