As a Geography student I am interested in many of the environmental issues that Birmingham Friends of the Earth are involved with and have always had a keen interest in potentially working for a successful charity. Therefore, I knew undertaking a three week work placement here would help me pursue my interest in these issues whilst also deepening my understanding of them. I would also get to experience the day to day life of a Campaigns Volunteer.
My experience as a volunteer at Birmingham Friends of the Earth has been nothing short of amazing. I felt immediately welcomed by all members of the group and I feel priviliged to have met many enthusiastic and compassionate people over my three weeks as a volunteer here.
My placement here has helped me build upon my most valuable skills and has been extremely beneficial to me and I know it will stand me in good stead for the future. Overall, it has helped build my confidence which is a skill I have always seemed to struggle with.
I have had the chance to be involved in a wide range of activities. This has included; all aspects of research, making a new Fracking webpage, updating the Nature Everywhere webpage, writing a blog about the Great British Bee Count, composing tweets, taking part in a roaming stall, attending a General Campaigns Meeting, covering reception and making a new display for campaigns related news articles.
Overall, I am pleased that I have been a useful asset to the organisation during my time here and my work can be seen across different platforms. I know I have made the most of being involved with this charity and I would urge anyone who is interested in volunteering to give Birmingham Friends of the Earth a try. You won’t be dissapointed!
Every day has been full of new activities and I have had fun getting to know new people. I am sad my journey with Birmingham Friends of the Earth is coming to an end. Athough, I am certain I will be back for more!
