Martin Stride from Birmingham Friends of the Earth said
“Birmingham Friends of the Earth is deeply disappointed that the Clean Air Zone has been delayed by the lack of support and leadership that is required from central government. We need to remember it’s peoples’ health which is at stake here; this delay potentially puts even more people at danger from the harmful effects of dirty air.”
“Despite this setback, we trust Birmingham City Council will continue in its quest to deliver cleaner air for everyone in the city. The charging zone may not be in place on time, but of course there are additional measures associated with the Clean Air Zone which the council has committed to implement and which it will be able to crack on with. These include improving the alternatives to driving such as making bus services more reliable with bus lanes and bus priority measures, and continuing to develop safer and more attractive walking and cycling routes.”
“The delay to the charging zone will now make the need for these additional measures even more pressing”.
