Event: local residents and groups unite to Celebrate CommUnity
Birmingham Friends of the Earth is organising a public community event taking place on Saturday 14 June to celebrate Refugee Week and Great Big Green Week.
The event will bring together local people to celebrate Birmingham’s diverse communities and raise awareness of the group’s Planet Over Profit campaign.
The aim of this campaign is to instate a new law that holds businesses accountable for human rights abuses and environmental destruction.
Catherine Williams, Placement Student at Birmingham Friends of the Earth said:
“For this year’s Great Big Green Week and Refugee Week, we want to raise awareness of the impact business supply chains can have on our planet and people.
“Too often, big businesses aren’t held accountable for destroying precious forests for commodities such as timber, soy and palm oil.
“Species such as orangutans and jaguars are under threat, climate change is accelerating and land grabbing is displacing Indigenous communities.
“It’s time for change. So we are bringing together local groups and residents to explore how people power can and is taking on businesses.
“Through the event, we want to amplify the voices of local organisations who are working directly with migrants and refugees and working to tackle the climate crisis on a local level.”
