Birmingham Friends of the Earth (BFoE) is urging both sides to resolve the industrial dispute which has stopped the Council’s collection of recycling bins from 400,000 households.

Libby Harris, BFoE campaigner says:
“Birmingham has been stuck at the lowest recycling rate of almost any city in the UK, and it has now fallen further.”

“This is costing the City Council money, because waste cardboard and paper are no longer being sold to the paper mill. There is more of it, due to home deliveries, but the larger bins bought by the Council are not being distributed. Instead, the Council is paying for all its waste to be burned at the Tyseley incinerator. If rubbish was really a fuel, then the operator would pay for it, but instead they charge for disposal. In 3 years’ time, the plant will start to pay a Carbon Emission Trading charge on what goes up the chimney (skyfill). The future has to be recycling, not burning.”

“During this strike, thank you for keeping separate your clean cans, bottles, also folded paper and card, and store if possible. Some supermarkets accept packaging and charities may welcome unwanted items they can sell“.
