On Friday the 6th of July we held our annual Organic BBQ at the Anchor pub, in Digbeth, to coincide with their Organic Beer Festival.
Rain threatened a washout as a deluge poured for most of the day. Fortunately for us the rain stopped and we were bathed in sunshine as the evening began. Our menu included organic beef and veggie burgers as well as three lovely cakes baked by Margaret and Dalia.
Ben and I began cooking the burgers as we all enjoyed fine organic ale. Personally, I savoured a Fairtrade Yorkshire Pale Ale, and others in the Anchor enjoyed a wide variety of organic ales, ciders and wines with many from around the UK.
As the burgers sizzled, punters clocked what was going on and the orders started to arrive. Rox, Eliza, Dalia and Adam took orders from those hungry for burgers whilst Richard and Karen cried through chopping onions!
The initial demand for burgers was great and we were rushed off our feet trying to keep up, which meant we were raising a significant amount of money for Birmingham FoE.
The cakes were going down a treat, especially the chocolate cake, which sold out in a short time. The evening continued with orders for burgers remaining steady and soon they were running out. What was not in short supply was the organic ale that we were all enjoying.
As the sun sank, and darkness fell over the Anchor we had the final push to sell off the remaining food. Our volunteers wandered around the pub trying to charm the people in the pub to buy the remaining burgers and cake with considerable success.
The BBQ was a great success – not only did we raise well over £150 for the organisation, but we also had a great time. It doubles up as both a social, and fun, way to raise money and I look forward to doing it again next year!
