Birmingham Friends of the Earth (BFoE) moved to its building ‘The Warehouse’ in Digbeth in 1977. To mark the 40th anniversary we undertook a Heritage project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to chart BFoE’s progress with protecting the environment and its impact on Birmingham. The project used archive material and the personal memories of volunteers and workers.
Over the years BFoE was involved in many pioneering practical activities including paper recycling and home insulation, and also spawned many successful organisations such as the Urban Wildlife Group and Pushbikes. The Warehouse has also been the home of many successful green businesses including Muesli Base, The One Earth Shop, Recycled Paper Supplies and the Amazon Café.
We showcased our findings at Birmingham Heritage Week events in 2018 and 2019. Much of this is also available to read or download from the ‘Memories and History page and we’ve posted some material on our Facebook page
Some of our collection is also available to look at, by appointment, at the Wolfson Centre, Library of Birmingham.
If you have any memorabilia we haven’t seen, or want to find out more please get in touch.
