Are you an enthusiastic individual who cares about Birmingham? Are you interested in environmental issues? Are you someone who enjoys speaking to members of the public? Then Birmingham Friends of the Earth have an opportunity for you!
Birmingham Friends of the Earth (BFoE) are looking for confident, outgoing, and enthusiastic individuals to help us build support for our campaigns, in particular our new Go Local campaign.
Go Local advocates localised solutions to key Birmingham environmental issues of waste, nature and the local economy. The waste strand, Waste isn’t Rubbish, is calling for a greener waste system for Birmingham, including a food waste collection.
By volunteering with us you will help build important public support for Waste isn’t Rubbish. This will involve talking to members of the public in a variety of settings, from networking events and street campaigning, to family fairs and festivals. Campaigning on stalls at certain events may also involve fancy dress. Your campaigning will be vital in helping make a greener waste system a reality for our city.
You would be based at our office, but will mostly be volunteering outdoors in Birmingham. Ideally you would be able to travel regularly to our office in Digbeth and around Birmingham, and be somebody who can commit to at least one day a week’s volunteering.

Roles & Responsibilities
- Looking for and booking opportunities for stalls around the city.
- Staffing and representing BFoE at those stalls.
- Talking to members of the public about BFoE and our campaigns, gettting them to sign in support.
- Representing BFoE at networking events.
- Attending and staffing stalls at festivals and fairs in Birmingham.
Skills and Experience
- Excellent personal skills with the ability to engage with a variety of different people.
- Experience of talking to the public.
- Excellent team working skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to speak to different audiences, and engage them to take action.
- The ability to communicate complex ideas simply & succinctly.
- The ability to assimilate new knowledge quickly and apply it.
- Flexibility with the ability to adapt to new and changing situations quickly.
- Knowledge of and interest in environmental issues, and sympathy with Friends of the Earth’s position.
