With loads of Brazilian events popping up around the city, this summer in Birmingham is starting to look exciting.

The Stop Climate Chaos Coalition (SCC) is bringing together organisations and volunteers from around the region to organise events highlighting this year’s Rio Earth Summit.

This June, 20 years on from the original Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, government representatives from around the world will meet at a ‘Rio+20’ summit to discuss sustainable development.

The Earth Summit is all about addressing global issues with local action, and so is an opportunity to build up local networks and remind our politicians that climate change and sustainable development must remain political priorities.

It’s really important that we work on a local level to raise awareness and show MPs that sustainable development is still important. You can do this by organising an event or attending one that’s already happening.

If you’re interested in attending an event you can do a postcode search on our website to find out what’s happening near you. Make sure you check it regularly as new events are popping up every week.

So far in Birmingham the following events are happening:

15th May – Campaign against Climate Change’s Climate Caravan in Birmingham: a day of events and an evening talk, focusing on climate jobs.

2nd June  – A big Brazilian lunch at Northfield Ecocentre. There will be food stalls related to Rio, climate change films and outdoor games.

9th June – Filming messages for the local MP in Solihull, some local volunteers will be out talking to the public in Solihull to get them to record messages for Andrew Mitchell.

16th June – A samba flash mob in Birmingham city centre.

16th June – A stall at the Go Green Fair in Solihull.

We’re looking for people to attend and help out at these events, so please get in touch if you’d like more information.

If you’d like to organise an event you can do anything from meeting your MP to holding a football tournament or local carnival! All you need to get involved is at www.rioconnection.org so why not check it out and get organising?

You can contact me on midlands@stopclimatechaos.org if you’d like any more information.
