On the 29th of March the cabinet of Birmingham City Council finally passed the much anticipated climate change action plan, which will outline the practical steps the council will take to achieve the 60% reduction of the city’s CO2 emissions by 2026.

While Birmingham Friends of the Earth congratulates the council on this momentous step, we will need to examine each section of the plan in greater detail before we can determine whether or not the actions mapped out are sufficient to achieve the council’s intended aims. This is something Birmingham Friends of the Earth shall be pursuing in the coming weeks. We also welcome the fact that there are regular review dates set for the plan and would urge interested parties to feed in to this process.

However, while at the highest strategic level they are promoting such good practice, this is not borne out by actions on the ground such as their continuing support for the runway extension at Birmingham International Airport. See our press release last week for details.
