The countdown is on for the UK's biggest ever demonstration in support of action on climate change!
On Saturday 5th December 2009, Birmingham Friends of the Earth, along with a variety of regional groups, will travel to the capital in order to participate in The Wave, the world's biggest ever demonstration in support of action on climate change. Join us in making Birmingham's voice heard.
Organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, The Wave, simulating the dangerous effects of climate change by performing a tidal wave along the banks of the river Thames up to the Houses of Parliament, will send a stark message to our politicians ahead of the 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) due to take place in Copenhagen between the 8th and 17th of December. With countries such as India and China, still refusing to agree to cut CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050 despite G8 countries agreeing to cut their emissions by 80% it is imperative that they act fast to reach a fair and sufficient agreement on climate change.
Friends of the Earth is calling for:
– | The Government to abandon its promotion of carbon offsetting and pledge to cut emissions by at least 40% by 2020 at home; |
– | New and sufficient money for developing countries, distributed through the UN, so that they can develop cleanly and adapt to the effects of climate change which are already putting millions of lives at risk; |
– | No inclusion of rainforests in carbon markets, so that rich countries can buy up large tracts of land to offset their emissions |
