Birmingham announced some ‘toe in the water’ measures to capture some of its own energy in April 2008.  It was announced that four schools have installed solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity.  The solar photovoltaic panels are an outcome of joint working involving ‘Be Birmingham’ and the City Council.  26 panels have been installed on each school.  Initiatives such as this one are welcomed by Birmingham FOE (BFOE).  BFOE have for some years responded to planning applications for new build, especially for long-life community buildings, by calling for automatic incorporation of energy capture measures.  Individuals can play a part in the process by responding to planning applications themselves in support of this viewpoint.
