As part of Let’s Get Moving, as well as calling for more investment in walking and cycling in order to reduce air pollution caused by traffic, we’re also encouraging people to take up cycling and walking as a way of getting from A to B. We’ll be looking out for opportunities that make it easier for people to start cycling and walking more often.
One of these opportunities is the bike trains organised by Centro & Birmingham City Council, which are running before and during the A38 tunnel closures. Bike trains are groups of people cycling on a set route at a set time, with people being able to join the bike train at their nearest convenient point. Birmingham Friends of the Earth were the first organisation to run bike trains in Birmingham. In 2011, in conjunction with Pushbikes and Sustrans, we organised bike trains into Birmingham for In Town Without My Car Day.
If you always wanted to cycle into Birmingham for work but have never got around to it then now’s your chance! The bike trains will be leaving the following locations at the following times and on the following days:
Be at the starting point 15 minutes before the stated departure time.

You can find out more about Centro’s bike trains here, and the Birmingham City Council organised trains here.
We’re pleased to see Centro and Birmingham City Council organise these this year, and give people a genuine choice to commute by bike. However, cycling is not just for when the Queensway tunnels are closed, and hopefully the amount of people using Centro’s bike trains will show what would be possible if the investment was there to make cycling a genuine safe transport choice for people.
Our Let’s Get Moving campaign is calling for the investment to make this choice a reality, and thereby cut traffic and air pollution affecting Birmingham. If you want to get involved in the campaign please email campaigns@birminghamfoe.org.uk
